Chatham, Commander, Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) embarked departed Piedmont pier, Yokosuka, Japan Yokosuka, Japan (NAF Atsugi, Japan) on 7 June 1975, with Captain Lawrence Cleveland Chambers, USNA '52, as Commanding Officer, as the U. S. Navy’s forward-deployed carrier operating with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific Region, conducting Operations in the Pacific Ocean, Refresher Operations in R-116 in the Okinawa area and conducted an air defense exercise with the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (Cope Cherry) off Okinawa. “On the 10th and 11th of July, cyclic air operations were conducted while USS Midway (CV-41) transited south to the Okinawa area, arriving in W-173 operations off Honshu and Okinawa.
USS Midway (CV-41) first three days was spent conducting operations off Honshu and Okinawa from 7 to 9 July 1975. Air wing refresher carrier landings and limited cyclic operations were conducted in R-116 beginning on 9 July 1975, when Task Group 77.4 headed for operations in the Okinawa area.
On the 10th and 11th of July, cyclic air operations were conducted while USS Midway (CV-41) transited south to the Okinawa area, arriving in W-173 on 12 July 1975.
USS Midway (CV-41) Flight operations and Task Group 77.4 exercises continued until the 18th of July 1975.
USS Midway (CV-41) turned for Yokosuka on the 19th and participated in a Cope Cherry exercise in R-109. The air wing flew off on the 20th of July” (Ref. USS Midway (CV-41) 1975 Command History Report).
“The navigator's ejection seat in a KA-6D assigned to VA-115 embarked in the western Pacific on 20 July 1975, inadvertently fires during a cat shot and the pilot follows seconds later believing that his navigator ejected because of a problem with the plane. The KA-6D crashed into the sea. The pilot is killed in the incident. He was the squadron's XO” (Ref. 84A).

USS Worden (CG-18), (COMDESRON TWENTY ONE, COMMODORE Leedom embarked), USS Turner Joy (DD-951), USS Fanning (FF-1076), Mispillion (USS Mispillion (AO-105) decommissioned on 26 July 1974 and transferred to the Military Sealift Command, where she continued in non-commissioned U.S. Navy service with a civilian crew as United States Naval Ship USNS Mispillion (T-AO-105), entering service as such in 1975 and USS Sacramento (AOE-1) and Commander, Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5). CDR W. L. “Following an at-sea period from 8 to 21 July 1975 with USS Midway (CV-41), USS Worden (CG-18) conducted a midshipmen cruise with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. August saw operations in ocean areas between Japan and Okinawa with Midway in preparation for "Midlink-75," a CENTO exercise in the Indian Ocean” (Ref. 1438).
“USS Midway (CV-41) conducted Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan (NAF Atsugi, Japan) at Piedmont pier, spending the next 14 days inport Piedmont pier from 22 July to 3 August 1975. This period was highlighted by the visit by VADM Baldwin, COMNAVAIRPAC, on the 31st. The following at-sea period was scheduled from 4 to 22 August with operations off Japan and Okinawa” (Ref. S. Navy’s forward-deployed carrier operating with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific Region, conducting Operations in the Pacific Ocean, two days of operations off Japan in R-116, followed by a transit to W-173 off Okinawa” (Ref. “After arriving W-173 off Okinawa on 8 August 1975, USS Midway (CV-41) began operations which were scheduled to include mutual ECM exercises with the U. S. Air Force and coordinated VP/VQ Bearex operations opposing the task Group.
Beginning the evening of 10 August 1975, flight operations were suspended for evasion of Typhoon Ora, disrupting USS Midway (CV-41) schedule.
Task Group 77.4 proceeded east on the 11th and 12th of August 1975, then north en route R-116 as it became apparent that additional storms would make the Okinawan operating areas untenable. The task group schedule was revised and an ASW encounter was conducted in R-116 with USS Trout” (Ref. USS Midway (CV-41) 1975 Command History Report).
“Commander SEVENTH Fleet, VADM Hayward, visited the USS Midway (CV-41) on the 14th and 15th of August 1975 prior to re-entry to Yokosuka for typhoon refuge in view of the forecast track for the next typhoon, Phyllis, with RADM Monger, COMCARGRU ONE, serving as Commander, Task Group, CTG-77.4 since 23 May 1975 assigned and CDR W. L. Chatham, Commander, Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) embarked, as the U. S. Navy’s forward-deployed carrier operating with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific Region, conductd Operations in the Pacific Ocean, two days of operations off Japan in R-116, followed by a transit to W-173 off Okinawa. After arriving W-173 off Okinawa on 8 August 1975, Midway began operations which were scheduled to include mutual ECM exercises with the U. S. “USS Midway (CV-41) spent two days from 12 to 13 September 1975 in R-116 before transiting further north to R-121 and R-129” (Ref. USS Midway (CV-41) 1975 Command History Report).
“On 22 September 1975, USS Midway (CV-41), with RADM Monger, COMCARGRU ONE, serving as Commander, Task Group, CTG-77.4 since 23 May 1975 assigned and CDR W. L. Chatham, Commander, Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) embarked returned at Piedmont pier, Yokosuka, Japan (NAF Atsugi, Japan), with Captain Lawrence Cleveland Chambers, USNA '52, as Commanding Officer, as the U. S. Navy’s forward-deployed carrier operating with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific Region, conducting Operations in the Pacific Ocean, R-116 before transiting further north to R-121 and R-129 areas of central and northern Honshu. The annual dependents day cruise was conducted the next day, with approximately 3000 dependents and guest boarding Midway for the cruise. The ship got underway at 0700; static displays, tours and air demonstrations entertained the guests throughout the day. Midway disembarked the guests that evening after a very successful cruise.
