Peary (FF-1073); USS Kirk (FF-1087) and USS Francis Hammond (FF-1067) operated with Midway. RADM R. E. Kirksey, was also the Commander, Battle Force Seventh Fleet or Battle Force 7th Fleet since October 1979, having assumed COMCARGRU FIVE/ Commander Strike Forces U.S. 7 Fleet (CTF 70) in August 1979 (11 June to 12 July 1979).

This command assumption in October of Seventh Fleet Battle Force apears to be CTF 70 as well, yet Carrier Battle Force, Seventh Fleet (CTF 77), has been reported as being formed to create CTF 70/CCG 5/CTF 70 during USS Nimitz (CVN-68) 1979/80 “WestPac”. While we can disregard both August and October 1979 dates of two separate commands being assumed because their not in the USS MIDWAY (CV-41) Command History Reoprts, we cannot disregard the command names of RADM R. E. Kirksey, Commander, Battle Force Seventh Fleet, Commander, Carrier Strike Force Seventh which are both CTF 70 or Seventh Fleet Battle Force referees to Carrier Battle Force, Seventh Fleet (CTF 77), thereby forming CTF 70/CCG 5/CTF 70 by October 1979 if the October Cruise Book narrative date is correct and if its correct to assume Seventh Fleet Battle Force referees to CTF 77. The August date was in correct as Command History Reports of 1980 state: “As the in-port drew to a close, CCG 5, CTF SEVENTY, RADM Kirksey and his staff, embarked USS Midway (CV-41) on 12 July 1979.). Two different dates of assuming command in Midway Cruise Books, 1978-79 and 1979-80. Command History of 1979 states 19 March 1979, MIDWAY bid a fond farewell to CMOCARGRU ONE and Staff as they disembarked. EQNEEDF Note: Two different dates of assuming command in Midway Cruise Books, 1978-79 and 1979-80. Command History of 1979 states 19 March 1979, MIDWAY bid a fond farewell to CMOCARGRU ONE and Staff as they disembarked” (Ref. 1978 to 1979 Cruise Book Command and Staff, 1979 to 1980 Cruise Book - Command and Staff - https://www.navysite.de & USS MIDWAY Command History for Calendar Year 1979). https://www.navysite.de/cruisebooks/cv41-78/index_002.htm
