Midway entered the East China Sea to rendezvous with the USS Enterprise Battle Group off Okinawa. The two Battle Groups will commence a transit via the Tsushima Strait into the Sea of Japan for participation in TEAM SPIRIT 83-1 and both Battle Groups will exit the Sea of Japan through the Tsugaru Strait to rendezvous with the USS CORAL SEA Battle Group in NORPAC for FLEETEX 83-1, a combined U. S. Navy and Air Force exercise, took place along the Aleutian Islands and involved a great deal of coordination and planning, and following FLEETEX 83-1 the USS Midway and USS Coral Sea Battle Groups will return to the Sea of Japan via the Tsugaru Strait to participate in Phase I of READEX 83 which includes a MINEX off Chinhae, Republic of Korea. USS Midway Battle Group will rendezvous with USS CORAL SEA Battle Group in the Yellow Sea/East China Sea for the final phase of READEX 83, involving dual carrier operations in the Okinawa operating areas, followed by a transit to Yokosuka, conducting OPPRE en route to Yokosuka.

Sea Trials in Northern Philippine Sea in op-areas R-116/599 from 19 to 21 November 1986. During this month Midway’s air wing, CVW-5, began returning to its base in Atsugi. The end of Extended Incremental Selected Restrictive Availability (EISRA 86-210) was marked by a Shinto priest ceremony on 26 November.1986, commencing officially on 3 April 1986.

Refresher Training (REFTRA), Navy Technical Proficiency Inspection (NTPI) and Advanced Training Assessment (ATA) operations in the South China Sea and Subic Operating Area (ATA in two phases.) CVW-5 will conduct CQ’s in R-116 and cyclic operations en-route to Subic Bay, Philippines and participate in low levels, coordinated strikes, EW training, bombing and ACM sorties in Cope Thunder 87-3. Simulated war at sea (WAS) strike conducted against USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) and her battle group. Annualex-62G, Startex found the Midway Battle Group in the vicinity of Okinawa, working its way back towards Yokosuka and Exercise Annualex commenced on 24 September 1987 and gave CVW-5 the chance to interoperate with the Japanese in joint naval maneuvers. CVW-5 then conducted intensive NLP’S in preparation for an Indian Ocean deployment. Midway conducted Annualex from 24 to 28 September 1987, lasting until 28 September 1987.

CVW-5 flew Minex’s, Bannerex’s, and conducted Missilex 87-4. Earnest Will and CONOPS exercises were practiced using USAF tanker assets; CVW-5 conducted a Linkex with the Royal Singapore Air Force; on station in the North Arabian Sea conducting cyclic operations; conducting two “Operation Earnest Will (24 July 1987 – 26 September 1988), the American military protection of Kuwaiti-owned tankers from Iranian attacks in 1987 and 1988 operations; CVW-5 conducted an Encounterex with the USS Iowa (BB-61) and USS Ticonderoga (CG-47), former DDG-47 and en route Mombasa, Kenya, Midway/CVW-5 conducted cyclic operations, including a WASEX and DACT with the French.
