\“During the period 1 October 1962 to 31 March 1963), USS Midway (CVA-41) received a major overhaul at the San Francisco Naval Ship Yard. The breakdown by departments lists the major repairs, modifications, and installations effected:

 

OPERATIONS

 

(1)  AN/SPS-8 replaced by AN/SPS-30.

(2)  AN/SPS-12 replaced by AN/SFN-6.

(3)  AN/SPN-8, AN/SPN-12 and corresponding indicators replaced by AN/SPN-10

(4)  One (1)  AN/SPA-4 and one (1)  VG repeater replaced by  two  (2)  AN/SPA-50 repeaters.

(5)  SPS-30 master indicator SPA-59  was installed in CIC replacing the VK-5.

(6)  SLR-2 replaced by WLR-1 and  ECM space rearranged to allow for future installation of the  WLR-3 and  SLR-10.

(7)  IFF modified  for AN/SPS-30.

(8)  The Phaser-90 communications system was installed replacing the sector array system.

(9)   RBB and RBC receivers replaced by twenty one (21) R-390A receivers.

(10)  Two  (2)  additional AN/WRT-l transmitters  installed.

(11)  One (1) -AN/SRT-14 removed.

(12)  Various antenna additions and modifications.

(13)  All electronic equipment not newly installed was overhauled and repaired by either the yard or ships force.

(14)  EN-39A. Film Processing Machine installed in Aviation Film Processing .Room.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

(a)  One (l)  KW/26

(b)  One (1)  AN/BRR-3

(c)  One (1) UGC/6

(d)  Model 19 Tape Factory

(e)  TT/253 .Reperforator

(2)  All communications equipment was overhauled by ship or yard force.

 

AIR

 

(1)  Two (2) year overhaul on catapults and six (6) year overhaul on arresting gear.

(2)  Jet engine test facility installed.

(3)  Avionic spaces enlarged.

(4)  Aviation suit washing and drying facility installed.

(5)  PLAT System installed.

(6)  Van Zelm Bridle Arresters, MK II, Mod 0 installed.

(7)  New arresting gear sheave dampers installed.

ENGINEERING

 

(1)  Two (2) Mark XIX Gyros installed.

(2)  Liquid Nitrogen (N2) plant installed.

(3)  Ship drydocked and hull sand blasted and painted.

(4)  Major overhaul of boilers with replacement of brickwork.

(5)  All zincs replaced.

(6)  Rudders repaired and resurfaced.

(7)  All winches repaired and tested.

(8)  Fire main tested  and  repaired.

(9)  Replaced #4 shaft.

 

NAVIGATION

 

(1)  UPN-12 LORAN receiver installed.

(2)  UQN-1B Fathometer overhauled.

(3)  SPA-4A Repeater installed on Navigation bridge.

 

GUNNERY

 

(1)  Six (6) 5"/54 Gun Mounts were removed.  This leaves four (4) mounts on board.

(2)  The aft MK 37 Gun Fire Control Director was removed.

(3)  (CONFIDENTIAL) There was a major magazine modification in the forward magazine group. The 5" magazines serving the removed mounts forward were combined with the old bomb magazines. The resultant larger magazines were constructed of Modular design permitting the stowage of bombs, CBU-1A or Shrike missiles. (CONFIDENTIAL)

On 13 June 1963, two (2) NATC, Patuxent pilots completed and the world’s first fully automatic carrier landings using production equipment aboard MIDWAY.  Using the SPN-10 system, the pilots landed their aircraft, a “Phantom II” and a “Crusader”, aboard without touching their controls.

            

MIDWAY participated in WEPTRAEX 6-63 conducted by COMCARDIV 7 from 7 August to 16 August in accordance with COMCARDIV 7 Op Order 302-63.  During the exercise the conventional and nuclear weapons delivery capabilities of the ship and embarked Air Group Two were exercised.
